BabyFace4D First Trimester Early Pregnancy Assessment
In most cases, a first trimester ultrasound scan can be an exciting introduction to your new little one and a very happy occasion.
The first two months of pregnancy can, however, be an anxious time for many women as symptoms such as vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping are quite common. This leads to concerns as to whether the pregnancy is developing normally or might result in a miscarriage or even an ectopic pregnancy. Since accessing hospital ultrasound services to confirm a normal pregnancy can be difficult, we at BabyFace4D aim to provide an accessible, professional sensitive and caring approach, giving advice and support where appropriate.
For ladies who have pain, cramping with or without bleeding we strongly advise contacting your midwife / GP and or hospital. If they cannot arrange a scan then please contact us.

Please note that a pregnancy is only considered clinically viable when a regular foetal heart beat has been observed. If the operator has not indicated presence of a foetal heart beat you will be advised to attend your hospital. Please note that most hospitals will not accept anyone without a letter of referral. We will prepare a letter of referral and clinical report for you if required.
We do suggest that you inform your healthcare provider of your intention to have a private scan.
Patients can be seen for necessary ultrasound examinations to confirm a healthy pregnancy. Such a Foetal Viability Scan is an ultrasound examination, usually carried out at 8 to 11 weeks to confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally and to provide some reassurance regarding possible miscarriage. Additionally, this scan will confirm or exclude whether twins are present. It is generally advisable not to have an ultrasound examination prior to 6 weeks as frequently the pregnancy sac may be too small to be visible on ultrasound at such an early gestational age.
Foetal Viability Scans are performed either by the trans-abdominal (across the tummy) or trans-vaginal (internal) route. For a trans-abdominal scan early in pregnancy it is important to ensure that the bladder is full prior to the appointment. If adequate views of the pregnancy cannot be obtained, then a trans-vaginal scan will usually be performed to get a more detailed view of the inside of the uterus. This is a simple procedure, in which a thin ultrasound probe with a sterile cover is gently inserted into the vagina to provide detailed pictures of the inside of the uterus. Occasionally a Foetal Viability Scan may be inconclusive, especially if the gestational age is less than 6 weeks. It may therefore be necessary to repeat the scan in 6 to 10 days, and / or to correlate the ultrasound results with a blood test measuring pregnancy hormone levels. This would be done at your local hospital.
