A 2D ultrasound scan is the traditional scan during your prenatal care. The scan will show you a black & white cross-section image of your developing baby. A 3D scan will show you a still image of your baby in a three dimension.
This shows you the surface of your baby. A 4D baby scan will show you a moving 3D image of your baby in your womb. So, time is the added fourth dimension, showing your baby waving & kicking.
It’s a bit like a movie as a live video effect is created. HD Live is the latest in ultrasound 4D technology and will show your baby in an even clearer view.
How does it all work?
A 4D baby scan uses sound waves to look inside your body. A probe coated with a conductive gel is the device used to perform the ultrasound. The ultrasound machine collects the images by continuous signals being sent.
The computer then processes these to give you an image of your baby. The ultrasound waves come from lots of different angles; this is to receive clear and detailed images inside the womb.
If your baby is right up against the placenta or the side of the uterus, the waves have to travel through these to and back from the face, causing a cloudy look.
What might I see during the scan?
During your 4D baby scan experience you can see facial expressions and body movements. You can watch your baby smile and yawn, and even sucking their thumb; getting a real sneak peek into your baby’s world. I wonder whether the baby is going to look like you?!
The sound waves need to travel through fluid, so the more fluid in front of your baby’s face, means better quality of pictures. Adults or fetuses cannot hear ultrasound waves – they vibrate at too high a frequency for our ears to detect them.
Although the scan will be in colour, you will not be able to see your baby’s skin tone. The colouring is simply added by the software when it creates the images.
